OCTOBER 28, 1946
FABL HANDS OUT ITS HARDWARE
No major surprises as FABL handed out its year end awards and in a season with some great pennant races and no one dominant team it is perhaps fitting that for the first time ever 6 different teams could lay claim to a major award winner. The fact that there was a third trophy in each league as the Kellogg Award given to the top rookie made its debut this season was why there were six awards but this is the first time since 1942 that no team boasted two award winners.
In the Continental Association it came as no surprise that Pete Papenfus of the Chicago Cougars was named the top pitcher. All 'Peter the Heater' did this season was lead the CA in each of the three pitching triple crown categories. It was a mild surprise that the choice was not unanimous -Cincinnati's Deuce Barrell grabbed one first place vote but finished a distant second in the balloting. It marked the second Allen Award win for Papenfus, who also claimed the hardware in 1941 just prior to embarking on a 4-year stint in the Navy.
The Whitney Award went to Bill Barrett of the New York Stars for the third time in his career as Barrett narrowly outpointed Leo Mitchell of the Cougars. Barrett, who missed 4 seasons serving in the Marines, has won the award in each of the last three seasons he has played with the 1941 and 1942 trophies joining the hardware he claimed this year.
The brand new Kellogg Award presented to the top Continental Association rookie went to Brooklyn starting pitcher Leo Hayden, a 19-game winner this season. The 24 year old had 7 of the 16 first place votes with the Stars Jack Welch, who finished second, Montreal's Bert Cupid and Cotton Dillon of the Philadelphia Sailors all topping at least one ballot.
For the second year in a row FABL had a pitcher claim the most first place votes in his association but fail to win the Allen Award. A year ago it was Deuce Barrell of the Cannons being named first on 8 ballots but lost to Toronto's George Garrison despite the fact Garrison's was the top name with just 6 of the voters. This time around it was Ed Wood of the Boston Minutemen collecting 8 of the 16 first place votes for the Federal Association Allen Award but Llyod Stevens of the Philadelphia Keystones won the points race despite collecting just 7 first place tallies. The remaining first place vote went to Detroit rookie Wally Hunter, who finished third in the top pitcher balloting. Wood losing his final 4 starts of the season likely resonated enough with voters to cost him his second Allen Award and instead the 30-year old Stevens wins for the first time in his career.
The Whitney Award in the Federal Association went to Red Johnson of the New York Gothams for the third time in his career. "Big Timber" led the Fed in both homers and rbi's this season and claims the award for the first time since his 1943 trade from Detroit to the Gothams. The top rookie was Detroit's Wally Hunter as he easily outpointed teammate Del Johnson as the Dynamos teammates finished 1-2 in the balloting.
MAROONS CONTINUE TO SHINE WITH THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY
Troy Renton Emerges as Star with 174 Yards Rushing and 5 Touchdowns in Two Weeks
The Detroit Maroons have continued their winning ways, securing their third consecutive victory with a commanding 41-10 win over the winless Pittsburgh Paladins at Thompson Field on Sunday. After a slow start to the season with two consecutive home losses, the Maroons have turned their fortunes around and now boast a 3-2 record and are tied for top spot in the West Division, largely thanks to the exceptional performance of their rising star, Troy Renton. The young running back has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, tallying an impressive 174 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns in just the past two weeks.
The Maroons wasted no time in asserting their dominance over the Paladins, with touchdown runs from Mark Belles and Troy Benton staking them to an early 14-0 lead and by the break they lead 27-10. The lead was extended to 41-10 when Jim Clapp had a 60-yard interception return -Detroit's second score off an errant Ron Johnson pass- and another touchdown gallop by Renton, this one for 14 yards.
Maroons' head coach, Frank Yurik, praised Renton's performance, stating, "Troy has been an absolute game-changer for us. His speed and agility are unparalleled, and he has a natural instinct for finding the end zone. We are thrilled to have him as a part of our team and look forward to his continued success."
The Maroons' victory over the Paladins puts them in a strong position after all seemed lost just a few weeks ago when the club dropped back to back home games to start the season. The Maroons are now tied with Cincinnati and Cleveland for top spot in the West and -while there is a lot of football left to play- a third straight trip to the AFA championship game is certainly within their grasp.
*** Melanson One of the Best ***
Forget about Hector Sawyer. Frank Melanson may now be the most dangerous man, pound-for-pound in boxing circles. The Pittsburgh factory worker emphatically proved his win over World Champ Archie Rees a year and a half ago, as improbable as it seemed at the time, was no fluke. Since then all Melanson has done was go toe-to-toe twice with Todd Gill -one of the toughest middleweights you will find- and then completely destroy the best Europe has to offer.
It was the biggest massacre in Boston since the British set off the American Revolution as Edouard Desmarais -the European champ who had never lost as a professional barely laid a glove on the champ before Melanson sent the Frenchman into the middle of next week with a tremendous hook the Desmarais has yet to see.
Quite a rise to fame for a fighter who had to beg his employer for an extra week off just to be able to go to Philadelphia in June of last year and fight Rees for the middleweight belt. The Brit had figured it would be just another easy payday in America -like the one he had just 3 months earlier when he knocked out Tommy Erwin in the opening round. But Melanson proved him wrong. Proved all of us wrong and suddenly went from a job on the war production lines in Steeltown to the top of the boxing world. His two fights against Gill - the majority draw a year ago and the TKO win last May, added to his reputation as a battler and the win over Desmarais suddenly has fight folks talking about the 29 year old as having the potential to be one of the best fighters of the past two decades.
*** Hunter Wins Rookie Award ***
Congratulations to Dynamos rookie Wally Hunter for some well deserved recognition. The righthander, who led the club with 17 victories this season, was named the Federal Association's top rookie and will be the first winner of the new Kellogg Award presented to the best newcomer. Hunter captured 14 of the 16 first place votes to win easily with his Detroit teammate Del Johnson earning the other two and finishing second in the balloting.
- The Chicago Chiefs have parted ways with third baseman Ken Mayhugh, releasing the 12 year veteran. Mayhugh, 34, hit .270 in part-time duty for the Chiefs a year ago and has spent time with 7 different organizations including the Boston Minutemen, for whom he was an all-star in 1937. Mayhugh might end up in the Coast League but don't be surprised if he stays in the east, with perhaps the Chicago Cougars as a backup/pontential replacement for Hank Barnett as a possibility.
- The Washington Eagles are faced with a budget crunch for next year and the made a number of cuts in an effort to address that including parting ways with outfielder Gene Zavala, who had a clutch pinch-hit for the Eagles to help them win game four of the World Championship Series.
POWERFUL ST BLANE TOO MUCH FOR CANARIES
The November 9 matchup between Rome State and St Blane is looking more and more like the game that will decide the collegiate football season as both schools continue to roll over opponents. The Fighting Saints improved to 4-0 on the campaign with a 28-9 victory over Western Iowa on Saturday. The streaking Saints, with junior Ricky McCallister as their guiding genius exhibiting plenty of cunning off the T formation, had little trouble in Sioux City to stay hot on the heels of mighty Rome State.
The top ranked Centurions have now won 24 straight after earning a 24-9 victory at the Bigsby Oval in New York over Carolina Poly. All three of Rome State's touchdowns came through the air -a rare occurrence- but that did not mean that the backfield duo of Gus Thompson and Chet Donelson were not busy. Far from it, as the pair played almost all of the bruising contest, leaving the game only after Rome State had scored it's final touchdown 3 minutes and 15 seconds before the end. Both contributed some dazzling runs to the Centurions long touchdown jaunts, but neither, for the first time in three seasons, could fight his way across the enemy's goal line.
Elsewehere, Noble Jones College remained perfect with a 55-0 blasting of Bulein but Travis College tumbled from the ranks of the unbeaten after being upset 27-21 by Red River State.
FAST CCLA RATED A EAST-WEST CLASSIC TEAM BY FAR WEST CRITICS
How good are the CC Los Angeles Coyotes? That question, a majority of football observers agreed after the Coyotes shellacked Sunnyvale 48-0, Saturday, may not be answered until January 1, 1947 when CCLA -from all indications- will play host in the East-West Classic. After watching the Coyotes dismantle three straight West Coast Athletic Association foes in Lane State, Rainier College and Northern Cal, outscoring them 102-20 in the process, and cracking the TWIFB weekly top ten, experts believe it will take a team of the ilk of St Blane, Rome State or Noble Jones College to test CCLA's powerhouse.
The Coyotes are big, fast and well coached. Kevin Gosse, the Coyote brain box on offense, is perhaps the best passer this side of St Blane and Ricky McCallister. Gosse looks like he is ready to step into a pro offense right away, engineering the CCLA offense expertly and daringly, running and passing with eqal skill. There are still some tests on the horizon, notably Portland Tech on November 9 and arch-rival Coastal California two weeks later, before any New Years Day appointment can be made, but most signs are pointing towards the Coyotes representing the west in Santa Ana.

WASPS STING FINCHES IN AFA WEEKEND ACTION
The Washington Wasps showed their dominance on Sunday at Forester Field in Cleveland as they defeated the Finches with a resounding victory of 58-0. The Wasps' offense was firing on all cylinders, led by quarterback Bob Krohn, who had an outstanding performance, throwing for 224 yards and four touchdowns with a passer rating of 141. Krohn also contributed with six rushing yards and a successful field goal attempt.
The Wasps wasted no time in establishing their dominance, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. Running back Steve Drake opened the scoring with a 1-yard run just 48 seconds into the game. Krohn then connected with Johnny Douglas for the first of three touchdown passes the duo teamed up for on the day. The highlight of the opening 15 minutes was an electrifying 73-yard touchdown run by Drake, putting the Wasps up 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and the lead would be extended to 37-0 at the break.
The game illustrated once more the dominance of Douglas, who is drawing comparisons to former Detroit star Stan Vaught and may just break a number of Vaught's records the way he is playing. On the year Douglas already has 43 catches for 568 yards and the season is not yet half over.
The Boston Americans kept pace with the Wasps atop the East Division thanks to a 38-14 victory at Minuteman Stadium over visiting Philadelphia. The Frigates were forced to play without an injured Greg LePage and missing the back certainly slowed their offense. It was a day of lodsided scores as the New York Stars crushed Chicago 35-7, Cincinnati shutout St Louis 31-0 and Detroit pummelled Pittsburgh 41-10.
The West Division race has become very interesting after the Finches loss as there is very little separating all 5 teams and a pair of key games next weekend with Detroit visiting Chicago and Cincinnati hosting Cleveland.

WESTERN DOMINANCE STORY OF CFC
As the Continental Football Conference passes the halfway mark it is clear the top talent in the league resides in the West Division. The San Francisco Wings and Kansas City Cowboys are both 7-1 and fighting it out for top spot in the loop, leaving little hope for the third place Los Angeles Lobos, despite the fact the southern California club evened its record at .500 with an impressive victory over the East Division leading Brooklyn Football Kings on the weekend.
The Lobos doubled Brooklyn 42-21 at Knights Stadium yesterday thanks to an outstanding game from Los Angeles quarterback John Fuchs, who threw a league best 5 touchdowns while passing for 215 yards. Despite the Lobos second straight win they gained no ground on the West Division front-runners as Kansas City crushed the struggling Chicago Comets 38-17 while San Francisco had an easy time in the Big Easy, blanking New Orleans 37-0. In the weekend's other CFC game the New York Gothams blasted the Buffalo Bulls 35-3.

LIBERTY COLLEGE TEAM TO BEAT IN CAGE CAMPAIGN
After coming within a single point of their 4 AIAA Tournament Championship last April, Liberty College is a favourite to not only return to Bigsby Garden for the National Semi-Finals but perhaps win it all next season. The Bells, tournament winners in the spring of 1942 as well as back to back champs in 1936 and 1937, came up just short last season in losing 45-44 to CC Los Angeles in the title game.
The Bells lost first team All-American Win Dupre to graduation but their four returning starters including senior guard Waylon Orlick and current All-American candidate Ward Messer makes this Liberty club perhaps even stronger than last year's entry. The key will be Messer as the junior center/forward and brother of New York Gothams slugger Walt Messer, may just be the best player in the country this season.
The defending National Champion CC Los Angeles Coyotes are also expected to be very strong with senior Jumbo Hinman, who played such a key role on last season's title team, back to lead the way.
Here is a look at what TWIFB believes will be the top ten teams in the nation this season.
1- Liberty College: As discussed above, the Bells are loaded and looking to win it all after a 32-2 season ended with a loss to CCLA in the title game.
2- CCLA: The defending champs will face a tough challenge in a very strong West Coast Athletic Association but the nearly all-California lineup led by Hinman and fellow senior Arnold Boren will be tough to beat. CCLA was 30-5 a year ago but there is one potential concern this season as
junior guard Gerald Cheek -a two-year starter- has an injury suffered from practice with the football team and may miss substantial time.
3- Carolina Poly: The usually dangerous Cardinals had a down season a year ago, finishing with a 16-13 record and missed the tournament entirely a year after they were crowned champion. Senior forward Paul Cowans and a terrific sophomore guard named Major Belk are expected to lead a turnaround in 46-47.
4- St Blane: Most of the attention in Latrobe is focused on the football team and rightly so given that program's success and the struggles of the Fighting Saints cage club. Last March they ended a 17-year tournament drought and big things are expected this season from a team that surpassed 20 wins in a season last year for just the third time in school history. They are a young club with likely just one senior starter so they may be even better a year from now with junior center Josh Samuels, sophomore guard Cy Worley and highly touted Bronx-born freshman Brian Threadgill expected to do big things.
5- Central Ohio: The Aviators were 20-10 a year after exiting in the first round of the tournament following an upset loss to Noble Jones College. Junior swingman Ziggy Rickard may be one of the best players in the nation and was third team All-American a year ago.
6- North Carolina Tech: The Techsters went 14-15 to equal their worst season in school history a year ago, missing the tournament after two straight trips to Bigsby Garden for the national semi-finals. Injuries played a big role in their struggles a year ago but the team is healthy to start this season and focused on making ammends for a year ago. All eyes will be on Mike Carter, as the freshman from Washington DC chose the Techsters after being ranked the top high school player in the nation last year.
7- Alabama Baptist: Like St Blane, the Panthers are held in much higher regard on the gridiron than in the gym but we are picking them as our surprise team of 1946-47 despite coming off an 11-18 season. Senior center Marlin Patterson was the Deep South Conference player of the year last season and is on the shortlist for All-American status this time around.
8- Lane State: The Emeralds have often been overshadowed by their rival in the Northwest Rainier College but this just might be their year to shine. Lane State was 22-10 a year ago and made the quarterfinals of the tournament for the third time in the past 5 years. They have been to the finals twice with the most recent one being in March of 1939 when they fell to Rainier College. They have an outstanding coach in Patsy Burk, who has spent well over a decade piloting the Emeralds and a nice group of veterans led by forward Andrew Williams and Hoss Wilmers with two outstanding freshman joining the mix in top ten recruits Carl Casswell (from Los Angeles) and Paul Woodall (from Ogden, Ut.)
9- Miami State: The aptly named Long Werth -a 6'10" center- was the AIAA player of the year as a junior last season and carried the Gulls to a 26-6 season and a berth in the quarterfinals. Tournament appearances were few and far between for the Gulls before Werth -a local kid from MacArthur High School- decide to stay home and play his college ball for Miami State. There is some talent surrounding him led by Jimmy Cormier -another Florida product- and the Gulls are looking to equal or better the school record for wins set last year.
10- Noble Jones College: The Colonels won 23 games for the second straight year and reached the National semi-finals a year ago for the first time in school history under the guidance of Lewis Holst. The young (36 years old) coach had some tournament experience from being an assistant at Western Iowa. Holst had an outstanding recruiting class as well, highlighted by the signing of top ten recruit and local Georgia product Mike Miller. If Miller can adapt quickly to the college game and seniors Blondy Wilbourn and Darrell Hanson duplicate what they did a year ago the Colonels may have another deep tournament run.

Other ranked fighters to see action last week:
Todd Gill, who had two tremendous fights -a draw and a 15th round TKO loss- to world middleweight champion Frank Melanson, returned to the ring but looks like those two fights might have taken a lot out of him. Gill could only manage a majority draw in a fight in Honolulu against lightly regarded Los Angeles native who now sports a 19-5-1 and record. Gill, a 34 year old Hartford native, is now 20-2-6.
Rising Middleweight Andy Jackson is another Los Angeles born fighter. Jackson was in action in Louisville, KY last week and scored a 10th round TKO over Joe Starr. Jackson is now 12-1-1 while Starr drops to 16-3.
Chris Sullivan, the number 3 ranked heavyweight challenger in the latest TWIFB boxing list, will surely see his name drop off that chart after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Nick Burks on Saturday in California. The 29 year old Chicago native, who faced Hector Sawyer for the World Title a year ago, now sports an 18-4-3 record while Burks improves to 16-8-3.
A pair of middleweights just outside of the top six rankings each improved their stock slightly with victories. Dave Sizemore is now 16-8 after knocking out Danny Burke (10-2) while Cranston, Rhode Island's Nick Harris improved to 19-2-1 with an 8th round knockout of Don Phillips in their fight in Philadelphia.
UPCOMING MAJOR FIGHTS- Oct 30 - Fall River, MA: Welterweight Danny Rutledge (4-0) vs Clayton Johnston (1-3-2)
- Oct 31 -Jacksonville, FL: Heavyweight Gil Hilliard (16-9-2) vs Malcolm Rllin (6-3)
The Week That Was
Current events from the week ending 10/27/1946
- Upon his arrival in New York at the United Nations, Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov promised that the Russian delegation to the UN would contribute its part toward strengthening world peace.
- Britain's famed ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth also arrived in New York Harbor as she completed her maiden peacetime voyage to open a new era of trans-Atlantic luxury travel.
- Completed election returns show that Berlin voters sharply rebuffed the Russian-sponsored Socialist Unity (Communist) Party in city and borough council elections, beating it even in the Soviet zone by nearly 3 to 2.
- Air transit is the latest hit by labour disputes, with pilots of Trans-World Airlines walking off the job cancelling more than 90 flights on the first day of the strike.
