1947 Season Preview

The opening season. I spent the last couple weeks setting this season up. I am choosing to be the dodgers for this first year. It should be exciting using Jackie in his first year. He will be the only black player in the league as neither the Browns or Indians will be in it.

The Teams
American Division

New York Yankees
Rotation:
Spec Shea
Allie Reynolds
Spud Chandler
Bill Bevens
Bobo Newsom

Stopper:
Joe Page

Lineup (R/L)
C - Aaron Robinson / Ralph Houk
1B - George McQuinn
2B - Snuffy Stirnweiss
3B - Billy Johnson
SS - Phil Rizzuto
LF - Johnny Lindell
CF - Joe DiMaggio
RF - Tommy Henrich
DH - Charlie Keller

The Yankees were the actual champions this year and have a dominant staff and lineup. Led by Keller and DiMaggio's premier power. Rizzuto and Johnson provide plus defense on the left side of the infield. Shea, Chandler and Reynolds are a top level 1-2-3.

Boston Red Sox
Rotation:
Joe Dobson
Tex Hughson
Dave Ferriss
Denny Galehouse
Earl Johnson

Stopper:
Johnny Murphy

Lineup (R/L)
C - Birdie Tebbetts
1B - Jake Jones
2B - Bobby Doerr
3B - Eddie Pellagrini
SS - Johnny Pesky
LF - Ted Williams
CF - Dom DiMaggio
RF - Sam Mele
DH - Wally Moses

The Sox were hurt by injuries and didn't get enough offense outside of Teddy this season and thus finished third. Dom DiMaggio adds plus-plus defense in center which helps a great 1-2 punch of Dobson and Hughson.

Detroit Tigers
Rotation:
Fred Hutchinson
Hal Newhouser
Dizzy Trout
Art Houtteman
Virgil Trucks

Stopper:
Stubby Overmire

Lineup (R/L)
C - Bob Swift
1B - Roy Cullenbine
2B - Eddie Mayo
3B - George Kell
SS - Eddie Lake
LF - Dick Wakefield
CF - Hoot Evers
RF - Pat Mullin
DH - Vic Wertz / Jimmy Outlaw

The Tigers have an offense set to draw pitches and walks. Cullenbine, Lake and Wakefield all have an elite eye. Cullenbine and Mullin also provide plus power, however the defense features no plus defenders.

National Division

Brooklyn Dodgers
Rotation:
Ralph Branca
Joe Hatten
Vic Lombardi
Harry Taylor
Hal Gregg

Stopper:
Hugh Casey

Lineup (R/L)
C - Bruce Edwards
1B - Jackie Robinson
2B - Eddie Stanky
3B - Spider Jorgensen
SS - Pee Wee Reese
LF - Gene Hermanski / Pete Reiser
CF - Carl Furillo
RF - Dixie Walker
DH - Arky Vaughan / Gene Hermanski

The NL champs feature the first black player in decades in the Majors with Jackie bringing plus contact and speed to a well rounded team. Furillo, Reese and Stanky provide plus defense all the way up the middle. The staff may potentially struggle issuing walks but should be saved enough by defense.

Boston Braves
Rotation:
Warren Spahn
Johnny Sain
Red Barrett
Bill Voiselle
Si Johnson

Stopper:
Walt Lanfronconi

Lineup (R/L)
C - Phil Masi
1B - Earl Torgeson / Frank McCormick
2B - Connie Ryan
3B - Bob Elliott
SS - Dick Culler
LF - Bama Rowell / Danny Litwhiler
CF - Johnny Hopp / Mike McCormick
RF - Tommy Holmes
DH - Frank McCormick / Earl Torgeson

The Braves feature the most platooning of any team featured. Led by Spahn and Sain (and 3 days of rain), they additionally feature the plus power combo of Elliott and Torgeson and great outfield defense.

St. Louis Cardinals
Rotation:
Red Munger
Murry Dickson
Harry Brecheen
Howie Pollet
Jim Hearn

Stopper:
Al Brazle

Lineup:
C - Joe Garagiola / Del Rice
1B - Stan Musial
2B - Red Schoendienst
3B - Whitey Kurowski
SS - Marty Marion
LF - Enos Slaughter
CF - Terry Moore
RF - Ron Northey / Joe Medwick
DH - Erv Dusak

Musial is the main feature here in a lineup that is loaded with classic stars like Enos Slaughter, Joe Medwick, Marty Marion, Schoendienst and Kurowski. Munger leads a decent staff. It will be fun to see if they can knock off the Dodgers in this replay.
