From the afternoon edition of The Ballarat Independent March 1st, 1905...After several delays Jack Howard and Ern Waddy finally came together at Rushcutters Bay to battle for the heavyweight championship of Australia and New Zealand...Unfortunately, despite laudable efforts by both men, and considerable punishment handed out, the result was a draw rendered by promoter and referee Hugh MacIntosh...Waddy had been put down in rounds six and seven for long counts and Howard had visited the canvas for short counts in the 9th and twice again in the 12th, but neither had done enough to dominate the other...Most agreed that while Waddy landed more frequently, Howard had inflicted the heavier blows...At Sydney's Metropolitan Athletic Club Jerry Jerome stunned the small crowd with a knockout of Peter Kling 45 seconds into round one...Jerome feinted with his left then struck a right to the point of Kling's jaw and it was over...It was noted that Kling had not worked up a sweat prior to the first bell...On a novice card held at Victoria Hall, Melbourne, former Victoria State amateur champion Albert 'Kid' Lloyd made his pro debut in a 4-rd preliminary by knocking out veteran Mick Flaherty half way through the first round...In the main bout Sid Neilsen of Millers Point and Wally Evans the New Zealand lad boxed six fast rounds to a draw, much to the surprise of punters who had wagered heavily on Neilsen to win easily...Former world champion Peter Jackson and one-time Australasian title-holder Billy McCall have joined the ranks of instructors at the Griffo Boxing School in Sydney and Melbourne respectively...Their fellow instructors include Frank Slavin, Billy Smith, Americans Hank Griffin and Young Peter Jackson...The school has already turned out several leading contenders and expects good things from the next crop...
