From the colourful pages of USA Boxing magazine for February 1905...Heated disputes between the managers of North American heavyweight champ Gunboat Smith and Joe Jeannette will delay the meeting of the two gladiators for at least a month as the fight's promoter looks to provide a venue agreeable to both camps...After his TKO of Tom McCarty at Pittsburgh, Frank Moran joins Jeannette's camp as one of a group of spar-mates to make a few bucks and pick up some pointers from the American heavyweight champ...As to his fight with "The Montana Cowpuncher" McCarty, Moran tells the press, "He's a good strong fella, but he can't hit hard enough to break an egg."; this despite the fact McCarty had knocked him down in the first round...The Westerner protested the stoppage at ringside, saying he was on his feet at the count of seven when the referee waved the fight over..Following big Carl Morris' vicious eight round gruelling of Newark native Sailor White, many prominent eastern newspapers begin to herald him as The Great American Hope and push for a fight with either Jeff Clarke or Luther McCarty to settle the issue...Though Clarke is on a steamship headed for Argentina, McCarty and his manager are more than willing to accommodate the burly Oklahoman...At the Empire A.C. in the Bronx, In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Bill Brennan (196 1-2) found himself on the losing end of a decision by referee Tim Hurst, despite scoring the only knockdown in his fight with Tom Kennedy (201) and winning most of the exchanges from the 3rd round on...
