Steam patches d'load faster and are like a traditional patch, IE only the files that changed are in the package. Stand alone patches are the whole .exe. One thing that means for the Fast Springs version is you have to backup and restore many of your mods where Steam will leave them untouched.

Before going to Steam my process for patching..
1. copy all folders that have mods to a separate location
2. d'load and run patch
3. move all mods back into my game
4. now ready to play
5. UNLESS I somehow missed backing up any of my mods..
6. In that case find the mod file, unzip, and put back into the proper folders
7. ready to play, I think?

Steam..
1. watch OOTP auto update
2. ready to play

Nothing to do with patches but the Steam Workshop also d'loads and installs the mods you select in seconds. Everything in it's place and working, no muss/ no fuss. Of course the mod maker has to place their mod in the workshop for that to work. So far the major ones have been there every year I have purchased the Steam version.

The price for easier patching along with the mods? I don't get the game three days early. That is not a small price to pay either. I am currently sitting here thinking maybe I should just get v24 today. But I have held out the last two years and believe I will make it though 'til Friday again this year.
