Why not trade say a 5th to the Colts for Minshew (or sign him before the Colts did) and use him as your starter for a year.
I am under no illusions that Minshew is a top tier QB or even tier 2. But he has seemed at least competent every time I have seen him.
With a good supporting cast, I think you could make the wildcard.
Why spend two firsts and a second on a 40 year old Rodgers who is a 50 million cap hit?
Maybe I don’t have a football mind. But I don’t get NFL front offices sometimes.
I wish my Commanders would do this. We will not get a QB with the 16th pick.
We have an otherwise competent team.
Use that pick on a TE or a WR and use Minshew for a year and see what happens. If it goes wrong, then you are just out a low pick or some money.

I like Minshew but his lack of arm strength really minimizes his margin for error as a quarterback. He has to be able to stay on schedule consistently because he's not capable of making the special throws that the top tier of QBs can, and while Minshew's largely done a good job of that in his career, NFL front office types presumably just see his lack of arm as a little too much to overcome for him to be treated as a starting option.
As for why the Jets would pursue Rodgers over a quarterback from the big second tier of QBs (like Carr or Garoppolo who were available in free agency), you just need such a good situation around this guys to be a viable Super Bowl contender. The Jets have talent but they wouldn't contend with one of those guys; given Rodgers' age and his play this past season there's a definite chance he's not in that top tier of quarterback any more either, but out of the teams seeking a quarterback move the Jets were the right one to pull the biggest gamble imo.
Also I absolutely do not think the Jets will give up two 1sts and a 2nd for Rodgers. Given his age and year-to-year status, the way I'm looking at it is this: if the Jets give up less than a 1st, they won the leverage battle with Green Bay. If they give up a 1st plus, they lost. If they give up a 1st and nothing else that's a push that probably still swings a little towards Green Bay but imo is the most likely outcome. I could possibly be way off base here but Joe Douglas has done a good job not getting fleeced in deals in the past (you can see how low my standards are as a Jets fan to compliment the General Manager for not getting fleeced), so I personally don't see the Jets giving up any more than their 1st and like a mid round pick.
