The problem I have with the referees is the lack of consistency in what is regarded as a foul. The defender jumps straight up, arms straight up, the guy with the ball lowers his shoulder and initiates contact, but the defender gets called. This happens far too often.
I don't have a problem with a technical foul called because the player said a Magic Word. I expect the refs to control the game--within reason. I don't want the refs to insert themselves too much into the game. But I also don't want the players to think they can take liberties. I don't want things to reach a point like I see all the time in high-level soccer, when a ref issues a yellow card and the players crowd around and get in his face, and then follow him around like a school of fish, yelling and gesturing.
