Games 132-134: Boston Americans vs. Chicago White Sox

Boston needed to sweep the White Sox to remain in the American League pennant chase. Instead, they dropped 2 of 3 games and all about dashed any postseason hope.


Game 132: A great game by the Americans (79-55), as they pounded the ball and got a solid pitching performance from Cy Young to get the 12 to 2 win over the White Sox (54-80). Young (20-12) allowed 2 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 70. The offense was paced by Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, Home Run, 1 Run, 6 RBIs), Bill Lange (3 for 4, 3 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), and Cy Young (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs). Chicago pitcher Brickyard Kennedy (8-10) only lasted 1 1/3 innings after he allowed 9 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 1 walk for a dismal Game Score of 3. George Hemming covered the final 7 2/3 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5.

Game 133: The White Sox (53-80) quickly put up runs over the first few innings and cruised to a 7 to 4 victory over the Americans (79-54). Bill Carrick (11-22) picked up the win, allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits and 5 walks for a Game Score of 49. John Anderson (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Hughie Jennings (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 Walk), and Harry Bay (2 for 4, 1 Run, 1 RBI) had a solid day at the plate. Boston pitcher Fred Klobedanz (16-16) took the loss after allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 10 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings of play; Game Score of 31. Chummy Gray and Willie Garoni each pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball. Despite the loss, Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Run, 3 RBIs) and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 Walk) played well.

Game 134: Entering into the 9th inning, Boston was in control and Noodles Hahn was poised to pick up his 24th win of the season; Chicago had other plans! Scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, the White Sox (54-80) topped the Americans (79-55) by a score of 3 to 2. Bill Phillips (16-17) picked up the win (Game Score of 73), while Noodles Hahn (23-13) was saddled with the loss (Game Score of 65). Chicago 1st baseman John Anderson went 2 for 4, Double, 1 Run was the star hitter for the winning team, while Win Mercer (3 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) played well for the beloved Americans.
