Games 126-128: Boston Americans vs. Baltimore Orioles
While their odds are slim, Boston continues to hold on to a glimmer of hope in the American League pennant chase. A 3-game sweep of the Orioles sure helped keep the dream alive.
Game 126: Boston (74-52) fell behind early and had to claw its way back to take a late-inning lead on the way to a 5 to 4 victory over the Orioles (51-75). While not his best game of the year, Noodles Hahn (22-12) did just enough to get his team the win, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 61. The Americans had a fairly balanced hitting attack, with contributions from Win Mercer (2 for 5, Triple, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Frank Chance (2 for 4, Triple, 1 Walk), Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs), and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 4, Double, 1 RBI). Wiley Piatt (11-18) got hit with the loss, as he allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 12 hits and 1 walk for a Game Score of 47. Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) played well in the loss.
Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #23 / Career: #23)
Game 127: This one was never in doubt, as Jesse Tannehill led the Americans (75-52) to an 8 to 1 win over the Orioles (51-76). Tannehill (19-12) cruised to victory by allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits, striking out 7 to finish with a Game Score of 76. Despite no having any extra-base hits among the 13 hits on the day, Boston hitters played well including Bill Lange (3 for 6, 1 Run, 1 RBI), Kid Elberfeld (3 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Ossee Schreckengost (1 for 3, 2 Runs, 2 Walks). Baltimore pitcher Ed Doheny (13-13) took the loss, allowing 7 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 5 walks over 6 innings; Game Score of 33. Zeke Wilson pitched the final 3 innings in the loss.
Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #20 / Career: #20)
Game 128: This was an odd game, as Boston (76-52) was cruising with a 3 to 0 lead on the pitching of Cy Young only to see Baltimore (51-77) storm back to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. The contest was finally decided in the 12th inning, as the Americans prevailed by a score of 5 to 3. Young (19-12), tossing a season-high 210 pitches, allowed 3 earned runs on 15 hits and 3 walks for a Game Score of 65. Sport McAllister (2 for 2, Homerun, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, Triple, 2 RBIs), and Win Mercer (3 for 5, Double, 1 Run, 1 RBI) pounded the ball. Ed Murphy (12-13, ND) did not factor into the decision but did pitch well by allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits for a Game Score of 65. Christy Mathewson pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball and turned it over to Ted Lewis (7-16) who took the loss by allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 2 hits over 2 innings of play. Jimmy Collins (4 for 6, Double, 2 RBIs) and Jesse Burkett (3 for 6, 1 Run) were outstanding at the plate today for the Orioles.
