It was a pro basketball team in the late 60s, but I always like the name New Orleans Buccaneers... they played in the American Basketball Association... the name tied in with the city's Battle of New Orleans in 1812 when Jean Lafitte, Pierre Lafitte and Dominique You, three pirates, helped Andrew Jackson whipped the British in the Revolutionary War... but I think the war ended two weeks before the battle... no internet in those days.
I was in college at the time at LSUNO (now the University of New Orleans)... my college pals and I regularly watched the Bucs at Loyola Fieldhouse... I first saw my future wife at those games... she was a Buccaneer cheerleaders... yep, I was truly blessed to marry the girl 3 years later.
Yep, the New Orleans Buccaneers have a dear place in my heart and my life.
