Wilfred Veras
Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40
Veras has three relatives who played in the big leagues -- father Wilton, uncle Fernando Tatis Sr. and cousin Fernando Tatis Jr. -- and another cousin, Elijah Tatis, is a fellow White Sox infield prospect. Veras signed out of the Dominican Republic for $200,000 in 2019 and is one of the more impressive young hitters in the system. He topped the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with a .949 OPS in his pro debut last summer and is battling for the Single-A Carolina League home run crown this year.
Veras produces plus raw power from the right side of the plate with a combination of bat speed and strength. He has aggressive approach and is looking to drive more balls during his second season as a pro, and his plate discipline has suffered as a result. He hammers fastballs but is vulnerable to breaking pitches and will need to make adjustments when he faces more advanced pitching.
A below-average runner with average arm strength, Veras has good instincts but is limited defensively. He split time between first and third base in his pro debut, but it's a stretch to say he could become adequate at the hot corner. He has a chance to become an average defender at first, but he'll need his bat to carry him to the big leagues. - MLB Prospect Rankings (White Sox)
