It affects player happiness, which will (potentially, depending on the player) affect player game performance. The particular danger is that bad harmony can hurt every player on the team, so it expands the issues caused by "problem" players beyond an individual level - they don't just play poorly themselves if something goes wrong, they drag others down with them.

At the same time, if the team has a lot of guys that are capable of playing through adverse circumstances, they can still get the job done. One thing that stuck in my mind when I was designing the system was a quote from Tiger Williams about the early-80's Islanders to the effect that they supposedly didn't have much use for each other away from the rink but didn't let that get in the way of running up four cups in a row.

The bottom line is, you have to make a decision about adding a player who's going to be in the news every few weeks for the wrong reasons: is your team mature enough not to let him become a serious distraction, or is he going to fracture an already-shaky situation?
