August 18-20, 2031: at Oakland (3)

The Rays won their first series in the last five, taking 2 of 3 in Oakland. By beating the A's and with the Orioles losing 2 of 3 the Rays' hold on a wild card spot became a bit more secure.

The opener wasn't any fun though as Oakland throttled them 12-4. Matt Manning (5-1) took his first loss as a Ray, going 4.2 9 3 3 0 4, and the bullpen was really terrible with Slade Cecconi and Gavin Bruni combining to allow 9 runs. The only bright spot was Arturo Gutierrez hitting his first Rays homer and 22nd of the year while Cristian Hernandez was 3-4 with HR #17 and 3 RBI with all of that offense coming after the game was well out of hand.

Transaction: Gavin Bruni was horrendous in two games since being called, giving up homers in each, so he was sent back to Durham and we purchased the contract of lefty Alex Vesia, who was in our pen for several years during the mid-2020s and was starting this year for the Bulls. He'll become perhaps our key lefty reliever with Dax Fulton out for the year.

The Rays bounced back and broke a 4-game losing streak with a 7-3 win in the second game buoyed by three big hits. The first was a 2-run homer from Kelly Crumpton (#35) in the 1st to get last night's bad taste out of their mouths, then after Oakland had gone ahead 3-2 in the 5th Orlando Tosado belted a 2-run shot (#13/15) to put them back ahead to stay in the 6th and Cristian Hernandez iced the game with a 2-run double in the 8th. Shane Panzini started and was wild, going 4.2 5 3 1 6 7 with the two unearned runs due to his own error. Jon Post (1-0) picked up the win in relief and in his return to the team Alex Vesia had a key 1 1/3 scoreless while it was a one-run game.

Joe Marlette was dominant and had to be as he and the Rays eked out a 2-1 win in the finale. Marlette (10-4) was 6 4 1 1 1 11 with the run scoring when he allowed a leadoff triple in the 7th and departed for Nathan Dettmer, who let the run score. Raymells Rosa survived on a man on 3rd with 2 out in the 9th to record his 4th Rays save and 22nd overall. The offense came on a Cristian Hernandez RBI single in the 2nd and a run-scoring wild pitch in the 3rd.

Team record: 65-56. Next up: An off-day then we play 3 in Baltimore, another team chasing a wild card.
