I don't know that its necessary to adopt a good defense/smallball offense strategy although that's where the team may end up. I look for players who are a good value for the money regardless of skill set.
Also there are bargains to be had among 30ish veterans on the FA list. Sometimes they'll sign minor league contracts or MLB minimum contracts and end up being starters.
