I don't play a lot of historical so I am not an expert on how that all works. I assume this is historical as you say his OOTP and career are similar? If so then how you set up the way OOTP makes the ratings could have an effect. Do you recalc player ratings every year based on real stats to keep their performance similar to real life, or base it on their career stats, or use OOTP's development model? Again I'm not the historical guru around here but obviously each of these ways (and there may be more?) will affect your player development.
The main thing to remember is..
Ratings drive stats
Stats DO NOT drive ratings.
I have never manually created nor edited a player in my game so, what I am about to say is only my understanding of how the game works. It's entirely possible someone that does this stuff a lot will come in and correct what I am about to say.
While stats do not drive ratings they can be used to create players. IE you put in the stats and OOTP creates a player with ratings that should produce close to said stats within a range of "x" and of course dependent on "dice rolls" for both games played and what the OOTP player development mode does to modify the player's skill set.
I hope that is of some help.
