12 Team Franchises for Major League Baseball.
September 8, 1950--Baseball News.

Today in New York the unnamed league got a name, Major League Baseball. Tim Gignac, speaking for the new league ownsers, stated that though they had no affiliation with the owners and leagues that folded prior to the war they decided on the name to "show the world that we will have the best players and best ball parks."

It was also announced that the league will have two seperate divisions of 6 teams each. The Atlantic division will contain the clubs: Philadelphi Flyers, Washington Chiefs, Baltimore Clippers, Pittsburgh Spiders, New York Knights, and Boston Bulldogs. The West division willl contain the clubs: Detroit Bombers, San Francicso Gold, Los Angeles Bruins, St. Louis Steamsers, Cleveland Blackhawks, and the Chicago Rockets. The two division winners will, according to Tim Gignac, "meet in the World Series best of 7."

The group also announced that an inaugural player draft will be held in June 1951 where players from all across the nation will be eligible. Exact times and dates have yet to be decided.

There have also been reports of several ownership groups across the nation that are disappointed that the leaugue is only allowing the twelve already identified teams in the league. Legal action has been suggested, but nothing concrete has occured so far. An unnamed source stated, "We could field a club just as easily as anyone of the clubs they have now and we know it could be profitable for all involved, but they seem steadfast in not going over 12 teams."
