It's obviously not as severe now but there are still complaints about ice quality in warm climate arenas during the playoffs, just this year Nazim Kadri was talking about how bad the ice was getting in Tampa Bay, for example.
Another example I can remember is how San Jose around 5 years ago when they were a playoff team had to call in a bunch of tractor-trailer HVAC units because the playoffs were during a heat wave and with the added heat from the crowd they were not getting NHL-quality ice.
On the other hand, Colorado is known to have colder ice than a lot of other teams, which makes it a little easier to skate faster and make quick passes, which the Avalanche have taken advantage of, their home record over the last few years is very very good.
