Jose Tena
#17 Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45
The nephew of 16-year big leaguer Juan Uribe, Tena signed for $400,000 out of the Dominican Republic as part of what could be a special Guardians 2017 international class. After batting .319 with two homers in Rookie ball in his first two pro seasons, he used his pandemic downtime to get stronger in 2020. He added 15 pounds before hitting .281 with 16 homers as a 20-year-old in High-A last year, then won the Arizona Fall League batting title (.387) and claimed a spot on the 40-man roster.
Tena has a well-rounded game but stands out most for his hitting ability, the product of a sweet left-handed swing and outstanding hand-eye coordination. His extra muscle translated into more bat speed and higher exit velocities last year, and while he won't be a slugger he should be able to provide 15 or more homers per season. Though he showed more patience in 2021, his walk rate still was just 6 percent because he makes contact so easily.
An aggressive runner with solid speed, Tena can steal an occasional base. He also improved his arm strength to solid during his layoff, enhancing his changes of staying at shortstop. He covers ground with a quick first step, has reliable hands and is a solid defender at short and third base and perhaps plus at second base. - mlb.com
