There is a certain appeal, though, to keeping the playoff field smaller, I think. It forces teams to compete harder to win titles, I think, which makes it much more challenging and much more interesting to me, to see who will end up on top or not. Of course, many teams don't often do well in those circumstances, on average. But when they do, it makes it much more exciting, I'm sure, to see teams who don't typically do well come literally out of nowhere to surprise many people.
I do wonder, though, who might have won the World Series in various years, if baseball had stuck with two divisions in both the AL and NL instead of going to the three-division setup as they did in the 1990's, jg2977. Of course, that would most likely have meant no wildcard teams, at the very least. Also no interleague regular season play, come to think of it, among other things. And would the Cardinals, for instance, have actually even been able to get into the playoffs and win at least one of their World Series titles, had there not been any three-division setups in both leagues and the wildcard? Maybe that's something either or both of us could perhaps explore later on, if and whenever possible, in our various dynasties. CD out.
