I realize this particular deal is a historic record breaking contract, but does this sort of thing happen frequently in baseball? By that I mean signing a
rookie to a huge massive extension?
Like no doubt Rodriguez is a great player, but as of today his entire professional career is a pretty small sample size. So why the hurry to lock him up until he collects social security? What if he crashes head first into a sophomore jinx? Or even worse, tanks completely so his rookie season turns out to be his best career year?
If you're sitting in the GM's chair, don't you want to see him string together two or three good years before ponying up this kind of dough?
