July 16-17, 2029: vs Toronto (2)

The Rays took both games from the foundering Blue Jays and have the division lead back up to 8 games over the Yankees.

Michael Prosecky made his first start since pitching in the All-Star Game and showed All-Star form in a 4-1 win in the opener at Tropicana Field. The lefty improved to 10-4, 3.03 after going 5.2 6 0 0 1 4, and Dax Fulton fanned a pair in the 9th for his 4th save. All the offense came in the first three innings with the highlight being Wander Franco's 2-run first-inning homer (#18).

Slade Cecconi was horrible in his return to the rotation, blasted to the tune of 2.1 6 8 8 2 1 and putting the Rays in holes of 5-0 and 8-4, but it didn't matter as the bats battled back and enabled Tampa Bay to take an 11-8 win and mini-series sweep. Wander Franco stayed hot, going 3-5 with an RBI single and a 3-run homer (#19) in the 5th which put them ahead to stay, his 4th round-tripper in his last 6 games. Ed Howard was 3-5 with a double, triple and RBI and Chris Gutierrez went 3-4 with a triple and 2 RBI. Kendall Williams (4-1) was brilliant in long relief, tossing 3 2/3 scoreless to earn the win and Yasunari Uehara, the sixth Rays pitcher of the day, earned save #27 with a scoreless 9th.

Team record: 61-34. Next up: Another mini-series with 2 games in Baltimore.

MLB News: Ronald Acuna Jr. of Atlanta hit his 400th career homer.
