"It doesn't matter if you win or lose, just get popular players" sounds like the Angels strategy. Ultimately you're there to sell tickets, and if people want to see Ohtani you can sell them an expensive ticket to see Ohtani.
I don't think you should be able to get a fan interest boost for a player you trade along, though, shouldn't you get a countervailing fan interest penalty once you trade him to net out to no gain? If that's not working that sounds like a bug.
