Regarding Coughlin, I believe the current ID is correct despite some conflicting notes. I've worked with Peter Morris and Bill Carle on this and we concluded that the obit was sufficient enough, along with the Hartford reference in Philadelphia papers.
As for the Chester, PA notes, my take is that it is a red herring. I've spent so much time digging through the Chester papers circa 1880's, and there is no player named Coughlin in the area at the time.
The Hartford Coughlin appeared for the local Hillyer Guard military club in 1884, as well as Youngstown and Hartford that year.
