I feel sorry for Mayfield and I'm embarrassed with the way the Cleveland media and the Browns treated him. For years it has been a joke in my family that every QB should be reluctant to come here because the Browns will surely destroy his career.
I'm surprised at how quickly the local media turned on Mayfield last season. He wanted to be here, played hard, actually played hurt for most of last season, and as far as I know did not have any of the character flaws Watson has.
Bringing in Watson was a real head-scratcher. I want to win as badly as the next Browns fan, but why couldn't we have found someone for the high-profile QB position without so much character baggage?
And I thought NFL teams have been making a special effort in recent years to appeal to female fans. It makes sense to do this: when I was growing up, the hardest of the hard core Browns fans were my mother and her friends. Why, then, would the Browns go out of their way to get a guy like Watson?
For years I did not watch the Browns on TV because I had a depressing job, and being depressed by the Browns on Sunday was not a good way to begin the depressing work week. When we got Baker Mayfield it gave my mother and I something fun to talk about. She was in a nursing home with dementia, but was still a Browns fan. She would lament the sorry state of the team and I would tell her, "Well, Ma, we have this hot young quarterback who seems to be the real deal..."
Oh well. I hope Baker wins a Super Bowl sometime soon.
