June 28-30, 2023: at Detroit (3)
Game 1: 4-5 L (13). LP-Fairbanks (2-2). Starter-Rasmussen (5 4 2 2 1 6). HR-Bregman 2 (8/18). Alex Bregman kept trying to win the game, and the bullpen kept trying to lose it and ultimately the pen prevailed. Bregman's 2-run homer in the 8th, his second of the game, put the Rays up 3-2 but Jeffrey Springs blew the save, then his RBI single (his 4th RBI of the day) made it 4-3 in the 12th before Fairbanks blew it, and allowed another run in the 13th thanks to a Zach DeLoach error.
Game 2: 0-4 L. LP-McClanahan (8-6, 4.2 2 2 1 5 7). Perhaps the most pathetic offensive effort of the year as they only managed 4 hits and struck out 12 times. Brandon Lowe was 0-4 with 3 strikeouts and is now 0 for his last 26 with a .141 BA.
Game 3: 12-5 W. WP-Graveman (1-0). Starter-Baz (4.1 6 4 4 3 3). HR-Bregman (9/19), Mead (9), JD Martinez (1/22). The bats took out their frustration from the day before to bang out 12 runs on 17 hits. Andrew Vaughn was 4-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI, Mead was 3-5 with the HR and 4 RBI, and JD scored 4 runs in addition to getting his first Rays homer. Baz couldn't make it through the 5th for the win with a 9-0 lead.
Team record: 61-37. Despite the tough series the Rays actually gained ground when both the Yankees and Red Sox were swept in their respective series, meaning the division lead is up to 6 games.
MLB News: The bulk of the trading action happened during the last post but there were a couple of small deals made. Atlanta picked up veteran starter and former Ray Jake Odorizzi from Kansas City and the Yankees acquired veteran MI Cesar Hernandez from Oakland.
Players of the Month: AL-Mike Trout (.311-7-15), NL-Juan Soto (.385-12-24, .332-36-67 for the season).
Pitchers of the Month: AL-Robert Ahlstrom (TEX, 3-0, 0.81). NL-Walker Buehler (LA, 5-0, 1.56; 16-0, 2.40 for the season).
