Beta testing isn’t really a fun opportunity to play the game early; it’s a chance to help the developers by playing a buggy version of it and playing to root out those bugs (yes, early versions of games are often buggy too; beta testers are rarely if ever able to sniff everything out; that said, I imagine that 23 would have been far, far buggier if they hadn’t done the beta testing they did do, given that as it was they had to push the release back).
It’s often frustrating and not always a net good time. Ideally you want a dedicated QA team to handle that, although OOTPD’s system of using volunteers is OK.
