2023 Midseason Review

White Sox in the third wild card spot, 3 up on Milwaukee in the AL and in the NL the Phillies and Brewers are tied for the third wild card, 1 game up on San Francisco and the Cubs and 2 on Arizona.

As to be expected from all those low-scoring games, we're pretty lame on offense (except in the one team stat that counts the most: runs) and awesome in pitching and defense (except for the walks). One of things that's helped us on offense is the baserunning, including steals, as well as a higher proportion of extra-base hits.

Josh Lowe has lived up to his prospect status and Alex Bregman has been incredible since being acquired but way too many at-bats to negative-WAR types like Brandon Lowe, Franmil Reyes and Heliot Ramos. The latter two aren't going to get those at-bats with Zach DeLoach and Mitch Haninger on-board and if Brandon doesn't snap out of it soon Taylor Walls is going to get some run at 2B after putting up some outstanding numbers when he filled in for Wander. Nothing to complain about with these pitching numbers though:

Only quibble I'd have is that our lefty relievers have not been that great (Springs, Raley, Beeks) and have gotten us into some trouble. Of course any runs the pen allows are magnified since the offense isn't giving us much of a cushion to work with.

And you can see what an awful start to the year Tyler Glasnow had with us. Of course he made his Angels debut last night and pitched 6 shutout innings (albeit with 4 walks) for a win and ironically the pitcher going the final 3 for the Angels save was old friend Ryan Yarbrough.
