Clay Holmes

For those on the outside, it’s easy to lump Clay Holmes in with Tyler Glasnow, Gerrit Cole, Charlie Morton and others — pitchers who’ve improved by leaps and bounds after leaving Pittsburgh. It’s also not wrong. Compare Holmes as a Pirate and Yankee, and it’s hard to believe it’s the same guy.

Holmes, who was traded for Diego Castillo and Hoy Park last July, has blossomed into one of the best relievers in baseball with the Yankees, going 4-0 with a 0.36 ERA in 22 games thus far, converting all six of his save chances while walking two and striking out 26. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has potentially unseated Aroldis Chapman as closer. Holmes’ WHIP in New York (.741) is more than half of what it was here (1.638). There was an article on CBS Sports this week titled, “The importance of Clay Holmes moving forward.”

This for someone who had a 5.57 ERA in 91 appearances over four years with the Pirates. - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, May 27, 2022

So if Clay looks like the Pirate on the left in your game, it is one I made. I'll update mine to a clean-shaven one though. I did him with the facial hair as he had it for years and the Yankees were but a blip in his career when I made it, but given he has grown as a pitcher and made his name sans the beard, it seems appropriate to update my own previous work. Though I almost joked for you to roll back to version .65 if you wanted to remove the facial hair (and all the troublesome detail) :P
