After the 1957 season, Dodgers owner Walter O'Malley decided to move the team to Los Angeles for financial and other reasons. Along the way, he convinced Giants owner Horace Stoneham (who was considering moving his team to Minnesota) to preserve the rivalry by bringing his team to California as well.

The Dodgers owner recognized that Ebbets Field, although a jewel, was showing signs of age. He wanted a nice shiny new domed stadium to be built at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush, which is now home to the Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets. That never came to fruition, so O'Malley took the Dodgers to LA instead.
