Walkers news: June 12 -- St. Louis 8, Springfield 7
Record: 28-34, 7th, 7 GB Cedar Rapids
Trailing 3-1, St. Louis put together back-to-back three-run innings in the top of the seventh and eighth to pave the way for an 8-7 win over Springfield at Oracle Park (2020).
The victory allowed the River Walkers from being swept in the three-game series.
Down 1-0 after Manuel Coke hit the first of his two homers in the top of the first, the Railers took their 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning helped along by errors by third baseman Mark Herman and shortstop Kerry Fackelman.
But St. Louis ace Ming Xiang shut out the Railers over the next five -- actually six -- innings to allow the Walkers to make their comeback.
Home runs were the big blows in both innings.
Mark Waterson hit a two-out, three-run shot off Ron Tanner in the seventh to put St. Louis ahead 4-3.
In the next inning, Coke unloaded a three-run bomb, his coming off Jesse Edwards, to make it 7-3.
St. Louis added another run in the top of the ninth -- Waterson led off the inning with a single off Jesse McNaboe and scored on a Zach Wenman double -- and it would need it.
Luke Leto capped off a 7-for-15 series with a grand slam off Ron Cox to make the score 8-7.
Cox, however, rebounded to strike out Brendan York to end the game.
Xiang (5-4) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter.
Frank Jimenez pitched a scoreless eighth.
Maximilliano Minelli got the first two outs of the, but also allowed the Railers to load the bases for Leto.
Cox notched his second save.
