1916 - Under the Hood
- Brooklyn seemingly swooped in from nowhere under new Skipper Wilbert Robinson (for whom they adopted a new nickname, the “Robins”) to win the NL pennant, but came up short to a strife-torn Red Sox unit – led by a young southpaw named George you may have heard of – in the WS.
- Erskine Mayer never led the league in ERA, neither did Rube Marquard, Art Nehf, Ray Keating or Pat Ragan.
- Larry Cheney led the league in WP six times, but never in K. Neither did Dutch Leonard.
- Guy Morton had only 9 career saves all told and never led the league in ERA.
- That’s 3 no-nos in the GE now for Eppa Rixey. Still none IRL. Frank Allen, however, did throw one in 1915. As did Eddie Cicotte in 1917.
- Burt Shotton led the league with 28 CS in the corresponding IRL year, but never in SB.
- Dave Robertson never won a batting title.
- Ed Appleton never threw a no-hitter. See my earlier comment about anyone named Bill James other than the sabermetric guru...
- Cy Williams led the league with 12 HR in the corresponding IRL season. Larry Doyle never did.
- Tim McCabe, who spent only four seasons in the bigs, never recorded a single save.
