August 17-20, 2043: vs Baltimore (4)
Game 1: Luis Barela had a big game and Jose Mendoza was solid as the Rays took a 5-2 over Baltimore at Publix Park in the opener of their 4-game set. Barela was 3-3 with a solo homer (#28) which broke a 2-2 tie in the 4th and then added a 2-run single in the 6th. He's now .309-28-91 and everything as advertised when acquired in the offseason. Dave Frick was 2-3 with an RBI as he has his average up to .256 after dropping to the .230s earlier in the year. Mendoza went 5 4 2 2 2 7 to improve to 12-7, 4.95 as he might be turning things around as well and Satoshi Sato got the final 5 outs for save #4.
Game 2: The Rays dodged the raindrops and a late Baltimore comeback to hold on for a 3-2 win. They went up 3-0 after 2 on RBI knocks from Josh Beckett, Mike Willis and Seth Williams, and Jim Brophy was in command at 6.2 5 1 1 0 7 to improve to 17-2, 3.17. Ed Pretty got Brophy out of a jam in the 7th and then Pretty gave up a run in the 8th before Doug Combs got him out of that jam. Freddy Zamora struck out the side in the 9th for save #13 as the game was delayed by rain for 28 minutes in the 7th.
Game 3: Greg Bookhart pitched well but Dan Anderson and Sean Forbes combined to allow 5 runs in the 7th and the Orioles took a 7-5 win over the Rays in a rare loss at Publix Park. Bookhart went 5.2 7 2 1 1 2 and Josh Beckett homered (#12) to help them to a 3-2 lead before the walls caved in during the 7th. Anderson (3-3) loaded the bases and Forbes gave up a double to clear them and then a homer to bring in 2 more. Dave Frick had a 2-run homer in the 8th (#8) to pull them back within 7-5 but that was the extent of the comeback.
August 20: Activated P Mike Barkley from his rehab assignment at AAA Durham, optioned P Jose Morales to AAA Durham.
Game 4: It looked like the Orioles were on their way to a split of the series but Tomas Laboy had other ideas as the rookie 3B blasted a 2-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th (#6) to give the Rays a thrilling 3-2 win. Brad Jackson was excellent (7 5 2 2 0 6) but a Doug Johns solo homer (#23) in the 6th was all they had to show on offense. But Jose Mendez walked to lead off the 9th and with one out Laboy took a Brad Lange pitch into the LF seats. Some years certain relievers are good-luck charms (Ed Pretty had 9 relief wins in 2040), and this year it's Satoshi Sato, who got the final out in the top of the 9th and went to 8-0 with the win. He's also been very good with an 0.58 ERA and a brilliant 7/76 BB/K ratio in 46.1 IP, good for 2.9 WAR so far.
Team record: 89-33. Next up: We close out the homestead with 3 against the White Sox, a real test as they're nearly our peer at 86-37.
