I agree fully that it would be best to somehow allow human players to make those late drafts towards the Soviet bloc. Realistically you would try to make some risk drafts for star players in there even though you didn't have prior knowledge of the iron curtain falling. Historically realistic as well, like you said.
Further issues with the iron curtain: I had West-German players' rights in the '80s and they wouldn't be allowed to sign. Same for German scouts.
Also, I just started a new historical run in 1993 and the iron curtain still stands for some reason. Am not allowed to sign Eastern European scouts, for example. (Can't report for players yet tho)

edit. July 1994 and I cannot sign players from the former Eastern bloc still. I guess I'll have to fix this using the edit function.
