Joel Glenn took a shutout into the sixth inning and Cedar Rapids jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding on to defeat St. Louis 3-2 at Busch Stadium (2006).
The loss was the fourth in a row for St. Louis.
Glenn, who in his last outing against the River Walkers earned the win while allowing one run over 6.2 innings, gave up five hits while on the mound this time. He struck out four and walked two.
Glenn (7-7) exited the game after throwing his 93rd pitch.
With a runner on first and two outs, Justin Sterner struck out Zach Wenman to end the inning and keep the Grapplers in front 2-0.
Those two runs came courtesy of a two-run homer from Tim Jurgensen off St. Louis rookie starter Matt Wilson in the top of the fifth inning.
Cedar Rapids went up 3-0 in the seventh when Jerry Perez led off with a triple off Wilson and scored when Mark Hill singled off Maximiliano Minelli.
Anton Melendez pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Grapplers.
He allowed an RBI sacrifice fly to Marcos Francis, which scored Bob Saavedra, which ended a 16-inning scoreless streak for St. Louis.
Antonio Echevaria pitched the ninth for the Grapplers and gave up an RBI single to Manuel Coke.
But with runners at first and third, he struck out pinch-hitter Jordan Quinto for his second save of the season.
