Running the Numbers on Missing Players
Hi all,
just going through my spreadsheet of missing players and ran some numbers.
According my numbers there are now 349 major leaguers (including National Association) without known images. This number is in flux, since a few players remain misidentified in the record book.
By era:
101 missing from 1871-1875
183 missing from 1876-1889
56 missing from 1890-1899
9 missing from 1900-1919
127 of the missing players only have one major league appearance.
4 missing players appeared in over 100 games
Top 10 Missing players by games played:

Four teams comprise have a high number of missing players:
Philadelphia Athletics (AA) 1890 17 missing players
Washington Nationals (UA) 1884 17 missing players
Baltimore Marylands (NA) 1873 12 Missing players
Brooklyn Atlantics (NA) 1872-1875 have 29 missing players
Here is my top ten most wanted list:
Ike "Sammy" Samuels - early Jewish player and lived until 1975
Jack Leary - 129 games and very colorful character
Jim Holdsworth - missing player with most prominent career
James Burke - won 19 games for Boston Unions in 1884
Fleury Sullivan - led AA in losses in 1884
Tom Oran - early Native American player
Shorty Gallagher - only player for Cleveland AL franchise without an image - extensive minor league career
Sam White - 1 gamer from 1919 makes him most recent player with no photo
Jack Smith - one of the Ty Cobb strike game players - and only missing Tiger player
Fred Osborne - reputedly first Alberta, Canada (my home province) to appear in majors
