I think your first point answers your second. As the supposed objective of the game is to reach, and ultimately win, the Perfect League, such 'gifts' cannot but distort the end-game to an unacceptable, and verging on dishonest, extent. Even the other 'whales' are disadvantaged unless they are prepared to inject such a sum themselves in addition to spending what they might otherwise. In other words, even the top-end PTP became a rigged game. Had I been in the business of spending four figure sums myself, I would NOT be happy.
Sure, for most of us the 'gifts' didn't harm the game economy; indeed it benefited many (including me) when there were PP flying about to take early lucky drops off your hands for a good price. But that isn't really the point, is it? It's an easy fix - for whatever reason it mustn't happen again.
