There are 3 teams that I would look at for a decent challenge (although we all know after my Kings historical challenge I will mess around with my beloved Sens).
The first one is San Jose. Lots of money invested in good, but aging dmen. You also have the Hertl situation to navigate. Are Karlsson, Burns and Vlasic going to continue to be good enough for a while, or should you liquidate one or some of them to alleviate the cap situation ? Tough call.
Minnesota is another one that I find interesting on paper. What do you do with Fiala and Dumba ? Is Eriksson-Ek only going to top as a 3C ?
The other team I find interesting is Calgary. They have been underperforming the past couple years, yet they have interesting pieces. Flames are doing good IRL but can they replicate that in the game ? It's not that certain. To me Calgary is the ultimate middling team in a smallish market that has potential but always seem to fall short...and it could be fun to be the one to push them over the hill.
If you're looking at a contender right off the bat...I'd pick the Canes. I like the Canes. I think Brind'Amour is and underrated coach. Carolina under Brind'Amour is always a very strong possession team. They play with structure and poise, and they have some great talent to boot.
