Another good strategy is to take your time starting to complete the live missions. Then straight up vendor the rewards. I did this with a brand new team a few weeks ago. With all the proceeds, I managed to buy a total of 6 solid budget perfect hitters. By week 2, I had a full roster of perfect hitters in the primary lineup and six perfect pitchers. I'm now in silver (so week 6) and my only non-perfects are one pitcher and two of my bench players (my catcher and my rando to fill what I"m missing, which is filled by live Mookie Betts to fill in at center and SS when the starter gets tired). Probably my "best" card is Lefty Grove, which I got super lucky to get cuz I got him with a 28k bid (which was nearly 20k lower than his buyout, a massive steal). The team won't ever make it past Gold league, though, but it's been fun.

There's ways to make a solid team very early without spending a dime, you just have to know how to work the system to your advantage.
