I'm simming a situation where the WHA is ongoing and the NHL collapses in the 70's. Yes I know not realistic, but fun.
Every year I fold two NHL teams and add 2 teams to the WHA.
I've got the NHL down to the original 6 now and the WHA is at 24 teams.
To encourage players signing with the WHA I have put a low salary cap on the NHL ($700,000 in 1972) and kept lowering it. It's now at $500,000 in 1979. The WHA has no cap.
Things I noticed:
Some 5 star players will sign ridiculously low contracts in both the NHL and WHA.
Some star players are singing multiple 1 year contracts.
Bobby Orr has jumped between leagues at contracts as follows
1973 NHL BST - 2 yrs at $75,500
1975 WHA PHI - 1 yr at $48,464
1976 WHA WPG - 1 yr at $150,605
1977 WHA WPG - 1 yr at 72,000
1978 WHA WPG - 1 yr at 63,696
1979 WHA WPG - 1 yr at 67,000
Meanwhile 2 star player Greg Polis has signed with Winnipeg for $210,000
Marcel Dionne
1971 NHL DET - 4 yrs with no contract listed?
1975 WHA CLE - 1 yr at $24,000
1976 WHA NE - 1 yr at $131,387
1977 - WHA NE - 3 yrs at 74,500
Any thoughts on settings I can adjust?
