Spend the rest of this season working on how tournaments work. You won't want to have to keep buying points to keep up with diamond level teams. Many good free to play managers are able to make diamond and even perfect league not spending a penny, but the backbone of that is having a strong tournament team that can generate you 20 or so packs a day. That adds up to thousands of dollars worth of packs over the season if you base it on the real life dollar to PP conversion even during PP sales.
It also seems that you and I have a similar outlook on the game. I started late last season in Perfect Team after playing the single player version of the game for quite a bit. I decided not to invest any money based on similar advice as what you're hearing in this thread. I invested money early this season and haven't regretted it, as I've been able to stay at diamond level for months and even had a couple perfect league appearances. I'm also glad I didn't sink money into last year and used it as an opportunity to work on other aspects of the game.
