After more digging last night, I found Louis Schildknecht identified as a ballplayer in the Louisville Street Guide of 1894 and 1895. (How I missed that the last time I looked into this I don't know.) He shared an address with his mother, Barbara, widow of Frederick. (The mother of our first George was Julia Rompf Shcildknecht, according to FindAGrave). Barbara had a son George and a daughter, Wilhelmina (again per FindAGrave). When Wilhemina died, the obituary noted she had brothers George, William and Louis, and that William and Louis lived in California. And Louis Shelly had a brother William living with he and his family in California, according to Census Records. So I'm now convinced it is the older gentleman.

I have yet to prove the two Schildknecht families are related, but the resemblance suggests they have to be.
