At age 39, veteran right-handed workhorse Mike Stagner, the 1973 MGL Harris/Lee (Pitcher of the Year) award winner, became the 6th pitcher in WPK history to record 200 career wins. Five more wins this season would get him into a tie with Hall of Famer Cheol-han Lee and 9 more puts him into a tie for 4th place with Jason Wilson.
Stagner, the first overall pick in the 1966 amateur draft out of San Antonio College, is unlikely to ever be inducted into the WPK Hall of Fame but there can be no doubt that the durable ground-ball specialist has had a fine career and as a member of the reigning SJL East champs, the Washington Night Train, who are off to a strong start to the 1983 season, he is hoping for a chance to finally get a championship ring at the end of this season.
