The Brewers took another step closer to capturing the MGL West pennant with a come-from-behind extra inning victory over the Phoenix Speed Devils in Phoenix and a big contributor was 27-year old infielder Rico Perez. Perez came to the Brewers in a June 1st (of this season) multi-player trade with the Los Angeles Spinners, in which he was the least promising of the three minor leaguers the Brewers received.
Perez is an excellent defender and has good speed but his contact skills with the bat are suspect and he has very little power. On the plus side, he does possess a good eye and can work a walk to take advantage of his above average speed and excellent base stealing savvy. And he's reportedly a good guy and durable. And he's a switch-hitter who is considerably better hitting left-handed than right. Anyway, long story slightly shorter, he's the kind of guy you bring up late in the season as a defensive replacement, pinch-runner, etc. And every now and then you give him a start just for fun.
And, of course he goes 4 for 5, scoring twice, driving in 2 runs, and gets the biggest hit in the 3-run 10th inning which caps the come-from-behind road victory. Because of course he does.
