Delos Drake

Del’s interest in baseball was greatly influenced by his father. William Drake owned a local semipro baseball team, the Findlay Sluggers, and Del was the team’s batboy. The outstanding black baseball player Grant “Home Run” Johnson played on the Sluggers in 1893 and 1894. Del and Grant became lifelong friends. Del developed a reputation as a baseball phenom at an early age but only played one year in the Majors and two in Federal League. In his only season with the Tigers, he made a lasting mark on the game. Bill James maintains that the regular use by manager Hughie Jennings of Del against left-handed pitchers and of Davy Jones against right-handed pitchers in 1911 was the first documented case of platooning during the regular season in the major leagues. - SABR
