You are right. The game does make an adjustment for imports on real stats as it attempts to take into account park factors. When using neutralized stats you get a more direct import from the neutralized stats because the park factors have been taken into account.
Roger Maris in 1961 hit 61 HR in 590 AB but Yankee stadium increased HR by LHB by about 9%, but that means his road games were tougher to hit HR though. When you factor the road games he had about a 3.8% advantage that season for hitting HR from playing half of his games at Yankee Stadium.
61/1.038 = 58.76
(58.76/590) * 550 = 54.78 = 55
Remember OOTP will set everything per 550 AB in the editor for players.
