The easiest option is to select a different season for the league totals, but yes, if you were to add up the historical league totals from those specific teams you are importing that could work too. However, there are more to league totals than just the battings stats though. Your idea will work though if implemented properly.
I suggest trying the 1953 settings for the league and see if you like those results.
