That was one of the dumber narratives I've seen make the rounds in the tabloids. He *JUST* went in the clubhouse last week or so and said he was proud of them, everyone is trying hard, enjoy your orange slices and gatorade, etc. Then the next week, 280 characters about how they can't hit (and IIRC he had another tweet like that a couple of weeks before the Gipper speech, plus the GM talking in a press conference about how the injured players don't hydrate/stretch). It's almost like what the owner says to the players (or worse, in public about the players) doesn't magically imbue the bats with power.
And last night was particularly dead, a single in each of the 5th and 6th and an HBP in the 7th and good night ladies, I think Pete was the only Met to touch 3B on offense and that was when he rounded to score the only run. And had diSarcina not sent him they'd have been shut out.
