The Dynamo's Off-Season of Activity Continues

Here at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Miami, Florida, the Detroit Dynamo's have continued to make some off-season moves. The deal to acquire SP Charlie Wheeler (23) and SS Erv Smith (30) from the Gotham's has been completed.

The Dynamo's have also changed out their Assistant GM. Former AGM Ben Hathaway has decided to go help Max Morris on Morris's bid to be a Congressman in Youngstown, Ohio. With Hathaway leaving for that the team needed to find another AGM. Here right before the start of the Winter Meetings, GM Martin and Manager George Theobald met with veteran baseball man Rankin Trull (61). Trull had last worked with the GWL Indy League Portland Green Sox who have the ugliest baseball socks ever seen. After a dinner meeting the parties shook hands and Trull was announced as the clubs new AGM.

Last week the club continued to mix around with its coaching staff that has seen a lot of change in the last few months. This time John Michaels was brought in to be the 3rd base and base running coach. There was no real explanation given for letting go former coach Jim Horrocks. When we asked George Theobald about it, he stated it was simply a better fit for his coaching staff and wished Horrocks the best as he is sure he will land with another club. I do know that last year the young and turbulent coaching staff was seen arguing a lot. You had a lot of very strong will personalities in that group with Max Morris, Ossie Julious and some others. The hope is this group will be better suited to have a better feeling in the clubhouse, although of course winning does tend to cure that as we saw last season when the club won 34 of its last 51 games.

We briefly had an opportunity to discuss these Winter Meetings with GM DD Martin. He was of course all smiles and said that he, Rankin and Theobald were working closely together to continue to improve the team. Reports out of Chicago have the Chiefs aggressively looking for some pop in their lineup but who they are talking to remains to be seen Could the Dynamo's still be talking about moving players?

One name that has been up for discussion was 3B Don "Donnie Baseball" Ward who is coming off an outstanding season after spending the first 2 months of last year looking for a job. The Dynamo's do suddenly have a glut of 3B with Stewart, Barnett and Ward so while anyone of them can play 2B, there will still someone playing off the bench. While it is never bad to have options and spare parts, it can be an issue, especially when you still have some pitching staff issues to deal with.

The Winter Meetings Start for real tonight
