The Madison Malts have been long overdue for success.
The team started life as the Canton Longshoremen, one of the original 24 PEBA franchises when the league
was created in 2007. The Longshoremen was formed by William Marsten IV, a little-known, reclusive
local businessman who has been firmly in the background of the team's operation since it's inception.
Throughout the 2010s and early-2020s, the team was a middle-of-the-pack club, usually finishing with
respectable, but losing records. One exception was the 2015 season, when the team had their first ever
winning season (87 wins), thanks to players such as veteran pitcher Mike Buck, and exciting young rookie
1B José 'Vapor Lock' Martínez. Despite the improvement, the team missed the post-season, and the team's
success leveled off and it would be their only winning season for over a decade.
In 2024, they became the only club in PEBA history to switch leagues; moving from the Sovereign
to the Imperial League. However, success eluded them there too, and they finished at the bottom of their division.
They returned to the Sovereign League after the 2-year experiment, and as the decade drew to a close, change
was on the way throughout the organization. There was even rumors of relocation.
Through all of this ... what about Madison, Wisconsin?
Madison had tried to lure a PEBA franchise before. In 2023, when it became increasingly clear that the
Tempe Knights wouldn't be able to continue playing in their current facility, an ownership group based out of
the area tried to move them to America's Dairyland. The group even received the funding needed for their very own
big-league ballpark, but the Knights deal eventually fell through, the park was never built,
and the ownership group faded away.
However, by 2029 and 2030, Canton's owner gave Madison a second look, and following discussions with local officials,
a deal was signed to build a new park called "The Malthouse", and relocation was confirmed! For the 2031 season,
the new team was re-branded the Madison Malts, and big-league baseball finally arrived in Wisconsin!
The fresh start (and influx of cash from the enthusiastic new fans) was just what the team needed,
and it turned the franchise around.
Two seasons ago, the Malts achieved their first winning season in their new home, and now the team is looking for a GM
that wants to take on the challenge of bringing this exciting new team to the post-season! ... something they have
never done in their 28 seasons in PEBA!
Does this sound like a challenge you'd like to take on? Do you enjoy an immersive league
with lots of interesting history? Then, send us an application! We'd love to hear from you.
