Result: The '97 Marlins nipped the '99 Braves in a 1 game playoff 82-81. The series was mostly close throughout, the '99 Braves did jump out to an 8 game lead early but the Marlins won 6 out of 8 in a stretch in May and got back in it. The '99 Braves got another lead in August going up by 8 games again, before again going on a losing streak losing 12 out of 16. The '99 Braves won the 162nd game of the season 4-1 to force a tiebreaker, before the '97 Marlins won the tiebreaker 7-3 to advance to the 3rd round. Castillo, Bonilla, and Alou all hit over .300 for the '97 Marlins. Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine both had 15 wins or more to lead the Braves pitching staff in the loss.

Jack Morris led the '84 Tigers pitching staff with a 16-12/3.48 clip and they had 5 players with 14 or more HR. The '98 Yankees offense was pretty good with 4 players batting over .300 but the pitching could not keep up as 3 out of 4 starters had ERAs over 4.00.

Result: The '08 Rays started out 8-1 to jump out early but couldn't hold on down the stretch as the 1906 Cubs had a 13 game lead by July and ended up winning the series 89-73. Mordecai Brown finished 20-9 with a 2.47 ERA and Beebe and Pfiester each had 16 wins as well. Frank Chance hit .348 with 14 HR, 40 2B, and 22 SB. The Rays had 3 starters with ERAs in the 3.00s, and 4 players hit at least 20 HRs or more but lacked any players that hit for average.
